Scarfolk Council

Scarfolk is a town in North West England that did not progress beyond 1979. Instead, the entire decade of the 1970s loops ad infinitum. Here in Scarfolk, pagan rituals blend seamlessly with science; hauntology is a compulsory subject at school, and everyone must be in bed by 8pm because they are perpetually running a slight fever. “Visit Scarfolk today. Our number one priority is keeping rabies at bay.” For more information please reread.

The illusion of choice

Unpolitic.me

Just when you thought political apathy couldn’t get any worse, there’s now Unpolitic.me, a Chrome app that can be installed to remove politics from your FB and Twitter feeds permanently––by replacing it with photos of cats.

Facebook and Twitter provide us with great tools and opportunities for engaging in valuable and meaningful dialogue with the people in our social networks, however it seems many people are instead preferring to choose political ignorance and cute photos of kittens.

Last time I checked, a friend was someone who was interested in what I had to say, and vice versa….regardless of whether or not we were in agreement. I want to engage in discussions with my friends. I value friends who can teach me things I don’t know, and in turn value the knowledge I can share with them. This is what my social network means to me, this is what it means to me to be part of my community.

So, how is it that social networks making us censor ourselves and others? What has happened to this so called era of global citizenship that the internet promised us?

People Staring at Computers by Kyle McDonald

Today, the media artist Kyle McDonald gave a seminar at the New York Times office building, where I’m interning this Summer, and this video was something he included. He was able to place an app on several Macs in an Apple Store and take photographs of people as they used the computers. He ran into some legal trouble over his methods, but he found that most people had expressionless faces as they used the computers. Many things can be taken away from the study, but I think one thing people (including myself) should is make sure to not allow computers to consume their days, to have real contact and conversation with others. Between jobs and leisure, people spend a lot of time on these machines and often fail to express their emotions outwardly as a result. I know I don’t like the days where I’m on a computer for too long. Check out the video and go over to kylemcdonald.net to check out other projects of his.

UPDATE: Just realized that the video is private when I embed it, so go to http://vimeo.com/groups/openframeworks/videos/25958231 if you can’t just click play and watch it on my post.
